Hello, my lovely.
I hope you’ve had a fantastic start to the week. My weekend was filled with gooseberries and blackcurrants. Basically, it’s been a jam-making-athon (it doesn’t get sweeter than that). I’ve also been pretty ill with a nasty cold, so this post is a little later than planned. Thanks so much for bearing with me while I get back to 100%!
First of all, I just wanted to say - thank you. Out of all the wonderful Substacks out there, I am so grateful that you are choosing to follow The Green Witch Writer Newsletter. It means the world to me that you’re here with me on this journey of getting closer to this magickal Earth 💛
Secondly, you’ve probably noticed that the past two weeks have been a bit tumultuous out there, to say the least. I’m told by several astrologer friends that it’s going to be one heck of a summer 😬 With this in mind, I want to point you in the direction of my guided grounding meditation from The Witch’s Survival Guide. There are also many more rituals and spells designed to protect and nourish you when times are tricky in this book. Please don’t be afraid to reach out if you’d like any guidance for grounding here.
This week, I wanted to do something a bit different and invite you into my home. I want to share with you some of the things that make a witch’s home tick 🍃
I don’t often take photos of my home as, quite frankly, it’s not very Instagrammable! I have purposely made my home quite plain, neat and tidy. There aren’t too many pictures hung up, there are a lot of white walls. Why? Because it makes me feel peaceful. Blank space quietens my super-busy mind and actually gives me space to think and be, rather than worry that I should be dusting or making a space look ‘good enough’ to take a picture of. It’s not for everyone, but it works for me, my spiritual connection and my own peace of mind.
I’ve recently discovered “Underconsumptioncore” TikTok. As ridiculous as the name might sound, the premise is an excellent one and one I have lived by for a very long time:
My house does not reflect the “witch aesthetic”. It reflects a make-do-and-mend ethos. Things are a bit old and wonky and might not be very beautiful here, but they are loved and practical and I am so grateful for their presence in my home. If you are feeling the pressure to adopt the witchcraft aesthetic and max out your bank account on candles and boho dresses, it may relieve you to know:
my altar is actually just an upturned wooden crate
the majority of my witchcraft tools are ones I’ve had since I was a teenager
80% of my clothes, including the ones I use for ritual work, are second-hand
all of the beautiful nature-inspired art in my home was made by friends
There is so much you can do with very little within the craft.
So, without further ado, here’s the reality of living in a witch’s house - without the IG bells and whistles!
